STEM Team Presents to Governer’s Executive Committee

On Monday, November 25th the Hoover STEM team was invited to attend the IA Governor’s STEM Executive Committee meeting at the Grimes Office Building. Hoover is the only comprehensive high school in the state of Iowa with an integrated STEM Academy and the only high school in Des Moines to be awarded a $100,00.00 grant recently from the STEM Advisory Council intended to be used for upgrades to our STEM classrooms. Maureen Griffin, Eric Hall and two Hoover STEM students, Alja Selimovic and Quayvon Gowdy presented to the council, sharing our facility re-design plans and STEM Academy Vision. The students were able to share their thoughts on what a STEM education has meant to them and how this grant will benefit all students at Hoover. It was not only the highlight of the council to hear from the Hoover students and staff, but it was an honor for the Hoover group to be invited to share our ideas with the Lieutenant Governor, CEO’s of several major corporations in Iowa, President’s and Provosts of the three Iowa Universities and Colleges, as well as the STEM Hub Coordinators from around the state.
