HOOVER FOOTBALL WILL BE BACK FOR 2022
For the past several weeks, there have been discussions at Hoover High School and within the school district about the future of varsity football for the Huskies. The reason was simple: participation was down over the past couple of seasons and, as a result, there were concerns that those remaining players who had to do more on the field would face a greater chance of injury. The most prudent solution seemed to be to take a break, allow our students who wanted to play the chance to compete with another DMPS high school, and look at how we could build back up in future years. But we got ahead of ourselves.
We have had second thoughts and have changed our minds. The Hoover Huskies will rebuild and play varsity football in 2022.
This is going to take some extra effort on the part of all of us in the Hoover community. We are going to recruit students to encourage them to participate and survey students to find out ways to improve our program. We are beginning the search for a new head coach, one who can both rebuild and sustain a successful program. After missing a season during the pandemic, we know students are ready to re-engage and participate in activities, and this is one more chance to do so. Finally, from our marching band and cheerleaders to our booster club, football is important to many throughout our school community who deserve our support.
Hoover is notifying the Iowa High School Athletic Association of our intent to field a varsity football team for the 2022 season, and are actively developing a schedule for all levels.
In short, the lights are going to be shining on Friday nights at McGrane Stadium.
