Welcome to Hoover’s IB Program!
The International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) is an internationally-recognized non-profit educational foundation meant to develop intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. The IB organization offers four programmes of study – each developmentally appropriate for student age and interest. Meredith & Hoover offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and beginning in the fall of 2019, Hoover will offer the IB Diploma Programme, as well.
Meredith & Hoover join more than 4,300 schools in 144 countries that offer the renowned IB Programme. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their academic studies and lives outside of school. The program, which is tailored to students who are 11-16 years of age, supports the development of communication skills, international understanding, and global engagement. Meredith delivers years 1-3 of the programme and Hoover supports students in years 4 and 5. All 6th through 10th grade students are part of the Hoover-Meredith Middle Years Programme partnership.
Hoover’s IB Diploma Programme (DP) is offered to 11th and 12th graders who are interested in continuing their IB learning journey beyond the MYP. The DP organizes teaching and learning through six subject groups, underpinned by the DP core. Students choose a course from within each subject group. For most courses, students take written examinations at the end of the DP. In many programme areas, students complete externally assessed coursework. Interested students should begin planning for the DP early, and contact the DP coordinator (Mr. Hall) or DP counselor (Ms. Stribling) in their 9th or 10th grade years.
At its core, an IB education supports authentic learning – creating experiences that encourage students to recognize relationships between concepts learned in all 8 of their subject area classes. Teachers engage with the IB Approaches to Teaching (& Learning) and philosophy to deliver academic curriculum with the purpose of helping students develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a global world.
Please continue to explore our IB website, and as your student moves through the Meredith-Hoover complex, reach out with questions and comments. We are always happy to discuss the good work Hoover’s staff and students do.
