Congratulations to Hoover Newspaper and Yearbook!

Congratulations to the Newspaper and Yearbook students for their outstanding showing in the Iowa High School Press Association’s Spring Journalism contest. They had a record-breaking showing!

Top honors go to senior Arabia Parkey for being named Writer of the Year. She also placed second in the Designer of the Year contest. This means she is a double threat! She was named the top journalist in the state for writing and a close second in designing. She beat out all of the other Des Moines schools and suburbs plus all other Iowa schools for these honors. No other student placed in both categories. She is also the first Hoover student to win this award.

Additionally, junior Sage Johnson was named one of the top ten Emerging Journalists in the State of Iowa. Juniors Lilly Johns and Callie Garcia were also named finalists for Emerging Journalists.

Eight seniors were named Iowa High School Press Association Scholars. They are honored for their community and academic work in the spirit of journalism: Lisset Espinoza, Amber Hagler, Rylie Meyer, Ripley Miller, Julieana Munoz, Kaleb Nichols, Melissa Pardock and Arabia Parkey. They had to write a short essay, have a 3.0 GPA and have at least six hours of volunteering.

The publications staff also brought home an additional 21 awards in writing, design, podcasts, video production, social media and Web site design. Congratulations to these students for their work: Sage Johnson, Arabia Parkey, Rylie Meyer, Callie Garcia, Melissa Pardock, Amber Hagler and Ethan Rogers.
