The Des Moines Civic Center became a classroom for Hoover band director Ryan Rowley and ten of his brass musicians on Friday. They had the opportunity to take a master class from the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, an award-winning group of musicians who combine jazz, funk and hip-hop to take the classic brass ensemble in a new direction. Before our incoming seniors can begin school in the fall, they must meet a new mandatory state vaccination requirement. Students without proof of vaccination or an exemption will not be allowed to attend classes. Currently, 81% of Hoover juniors do not have this vaccination. Kathie Danielson, the director of high schools at Des Moines Public Schools, will end her career where it began: Hoover High School. Danielson takes over as interim principal at Hoover for the 2017-18 school year as our principal Cynthia Flesch prepares to retire later this spring. Nine Hoover students will be participating in the DMPS High School Art Exhibit at the Heritage Gallery, 111 Court Ave. from March 30 – April 11th. They are Nicole Rodriguez, Savannah Lester, Ana Larson, Jackie Alvarez, Katelynn Bennett, Bailey Carpenter, Rachel Amann, Meressa Moriarity, and Natalie Singletary.
Hoover’s Academic Decathlon team represented the school well over the weekend of March 3-4, 2017. Colby Williams earned an individual silver medal for her interview and Max Tensen earned a bronze medal for his knowledge of this year’s music curriculum.
